The vast area of the wildlife park is dissectedinto two parts by the mighty river Indus that flows through it. This sanctuary forms a part of the HinduKush Himalaya.

The temperature here ranges from -5 degree Celsius to -35 degree Celsius. The summer season (March-June) stays for a short span but is pleasant and comfortable with a temperature ranging from 12 degrees to 23 degrees. During winter (November-February)temperature usually stays between 0 degree to -20 degrees or even less. It is needless to say that the region remains bitterly cold and experiences thunderstorms throughout the year. Inspite of having unfavorable climatic conditions, this sanctuary has managed to attract the interest of the tourists, who flock to this region to witness the grandeur of its unspoiled, pristine beauty.

About 44 species of water birds can be spotted here which include the endangered Black-Necked Crane,Brown-Headed Gulls, Bar-Headed Geese, Brahminy Ducks,etc. Seasonal Migratory birds are mostly found in the lakes.
