Galathea National Park is a life changing experience offering the tourists the rarest of opportunity to be the closest with nature. Nestled away in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the National Park forms a large part of the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. The national park is famous for its scenic beauty, as well as for its wide and exotic variety of fauna spread across the lush flora.


Location of the galathea National Park

The Galathea National Park, in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is demographically located in the “Great Nicobar Island”, which is the largest in Nicobar group of islands. Located at the southernmost part of Andaman archipelago, the park covers a total area of 110 sq km. Galatheais separated with the Campbell Bay National Park by a 12 km long stretch of forest.


Climatic conditions

The Galathea National Park enjoys an acute tropical climate, and encounters only monsoons and summers. During the summer, the temperature is quite high, though monsoons are drastically cooler with a sharp dip in the temperature. At the same time, monsoons experience heavy rainfall making it difficult for the travelers to access or travel around. The annual rainfall ranges from 3000 to 3800 mm. There is no such winter in the Great Nicobar Island, as it is hot and humid climate throughout the year.

One can visit the Galathea National Park throughout the year. However, the best time to travel the national park is between October and April, when the climate is pleasant and perfect to make your travel plans.

Galathea National Park is the paradise for nature lovers where each species supersede the other. Adding to the exotic and unusual beauty of the park is the wide variety of wildlife, few of which are distinctly found only here. With a total number of 50 mammals, 26 varieties of rodents, 14 species of bats, 270 species of birds and 225 species of butterflies and multiple flora including rare vegetations, Galathea National Park speaks for its uniqueness in every sense possible.

Uncommon species of animals like Crab Eating Macaques, Giant Leatherback Turtles, Salt Water Crocodiles, Water Monitor Lizards, Robber Crabs, Malayan Box Turtles, Reticulated Pythons, Nicobar Tree Shrews, Palm Civets and Fruit Bats are found only here in this region with quite a few of them as endangered species.

The avifauna of Galathea National Park is equally interesting with species like Green Imperial Pigeon, Nicobar Pigeon, Edible Nest Swiftlet, Nicobar Scrub-Fowl, Megapode and multiple species of Sea Eagle hovering around the park.

Coming to the flora of the region, which is tropical and subtropical type, contributes to unique vegetation containing moist broadleaf forests and thick mangroves. The park is the home to diverse plant species and trees including some of the rarest ones and with medicinal values. Around 1300 variety of unseen plants in India and a total of 2200 varieties of plants - out of which 200 are endemic – Galathea National Park stands out with its flourishing flora.
